The New York Times Visits Miku

The New York Times writer Suzanne MacNeille took a trip to Vancouver in early November, and visited Miku Restaurant as a part of her food adventure tour.

Praising the diversity of cuisine here in the rainy city, Suzanne came by Miku one lunch hour to enjoy our contemporary Japanese menu with a unique French twist.

Among Suzanne’s favourites were our crispy Calamari, spicy Soba Peperoncino, and our fiery Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi. Here’s how she described our famous dish:

“Salmon oshi sushi lived up to expectations. A thin layer of pressed local wild salmon atop rectangles of rice had been torched just enough to coax a caramelized flavor from a sweet sauce (I asked a waitress what was in it; “It’s a secret,” she said, sotto voce) that augmented but didn’t overwhelm the pure flavor of the salmon.”

-Suzanne MacNeille, The New York Times

Last but not least, Suzanne concluded her lunch with our signature Green Tea Opera cake, the delectable treat with contrasting layers of green tea génoise, dark chocolate ganache, hazelnut wafer, azuki bean cream, and matcha buttercream that takes three days to make.

THOUGHTFUL JAPANESE DINING

Miku Restaurant introduces modern take on traditional Japanese KaisekiKaiseki Collage Experience the nuances of traditional Japanese multi-course dining as Coal Harbour’s Miku Restaurant introduces three Kaiseki-inspired menus. Considered an art form, Kaiseki combines meticulous preparation, beautiful presentation, and an air of mystery in one memorable meal.

“We wanted to build something entirely new and fresh,” explains Seigo Nakamura, owner of Aburi Restaurants Canada Ltd. “Ori, yet still reminiscent of the Kaiseki tradition that evokes the spirit of celebration. Diners will delight in each bite as they discover what is in the special Arita dishes, course-after-course. By doing this, we hope to add another dimension to Miku dining and have memories linger after a thoughtful meal.”

Balancing taste, texture and appearance, Miku’s three Kaiseki options, Shokai ($68), Kaisen ($88) and Aburi ($118), are served on handcrafted Japanese Arita plates meant to enrich the presentation by tying in to its seasonal theme. The Aburi menu, specifically explores a variety of global flavours that go beyond Miku’s signature menu items.

An experience that is as surprising as it is fun; guests begin the Kaiseki experience by opening up the Arita-plated first course (Kaiseki Zenzai) to enjoy something new and igniting their palates for what is to come. Guests can expect unique dishes such as scallops with yuzu puttanesca, kaisen temari, and beef carpaccio with jalapeno-garlic ponzu.

The Arita plates were selected to complement Miku’s dishes because of their bold colours, asymmetrical design, and use of high-quality Japanese porcelain. Named after the founding town, the plates assist in telling the Kaiseki story.

Miku Restaurant to Move to Waterfront Location

Aburi Restaurants Canada is pleased to announce the relocation of their award winning restaurant, Miku to the former location of Aqua Riva at 200 Granville Street. Miku has been a growing success since their opening in 2008 and have garnered a loyal customer base with their signature Aburi style sushi. “Our steady growth and great local support has prompted the need for a larger space,” states CEO, Seigo Nakamura, “the opportunity to be the first Japanese restaurant on the waterfront is something we felt we could not pass up on.” Being a mere four minute walk from their current location, Miku will undoubtedly retain it’s strong following while adding more seats and a spectacular view. The new restaurant will boast an amazing waterfront patio as well as an upscale lounge and private dining room. Planned relocation is for Spring of 2013.
